DIgSILENT about to Complete Integrated LNG Compressor Simulations

End August 2002 DIgSILENT GmbH will complete one of its most challenging projects performed in the past years. A simulation model for the MLNG Tiga expansion (Petronas, Bintulu/Malaysia) is covering the 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems with complete integration of the process dynamics. The project, which was jointly developed with AspenTech Ltd., UK, required an on-line link of the DIgSILENT PowerFactory software with AspenTech's process simulation tool. Such integrated simulations are required as C3/MR compressor upset conditions will generate major torque variations of several hundred percent at the C3 and MR trains, finally resulting in the loss of synchronism of the 60 Hz system.

On the PowerFactory side, the simultaneous process and electrical system simulations are realized via the provision of synchronous integration algorithms and model signal exchange via RPC links using the PowerFactory DSL modeling technique. In this way, a distributed simulation is realized where the electrical system and the process system is solved on individual high performance computer running under MS-Windows and Unix respectively. With the utilization of the PowerFactory engine mode, the process simulation tool can remote control the PowerFactory software as required for efficient implementation of several hundreds of simulation runs.

The electrical system representation comprises:

  • 60 Hz system with C3 and MR compressors, gasturbines, AVR, turbine control, secondary control
  • 50 Hz system with several steam units, gasturbines, HV and LV motors, complete protection and control
  • LCI connection the 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems with complete unit control and secondary control.

The system model is able to run in EMT mode as well as in RMS mode. EMT mode simulations are required for simulating train start-up scenarios. All process upset conditions are analyzed in RMS mode where a system model with several hundreds of buses, motors, etc are considered.
