DIgSILENT completes Rehabilitation and Expansion Study for Refineria ISLA / Curaçao

In preparation for a major expansion of one of the world’s oldest oil refineries, Refineria ISLA / Curaçao engaged DIgSILENT GmbH to carry out a conceptual study for the design of a completely upgraded electrical system.

The key driver for this project was to ensure that the ISLA electrical system could accommodate a planned load increase of approximately 60%. Furthermore, with some of the existing electrical infrastructure dating back to the 1950s, the study also had to consider the rehabilitation of the present system so as to comply with international standards while minimizing the impact on refinery production.

The services delivered by DIgSILENT GmbH for this study included:

  • Detailed modeling and simulation of the refinery electrical system in its present state
  • Development of three options for the re-design of the electrical system to accommodate the increased load and to replace existing infrastructure that has reached EOL, including system studies and Class V cost estimates for each option
  • Development of a pre-FEED design package for the option selected by ISLA, including preliminary single line diagrams, layouts, material take-offs, a project implementation plan and a Class III cost estimate
  • Protection coordination study for the refinery in its present state
  • Preliminary design for a new SCADA system

  • Provision and on-site PowerFactory training for ISLA personnel
