Eskom Distribution chooses DIgSILENT's PowerFactory

Eskom Distribution (South Africa) has acquired a corporate license for the power system simulation software, PowerFactory, by DIgSILENT. The license consists of 120 installations, of varying configuration, spread across the seven distribution regions of Eskom. According to Eskom Distribution Information System Management (DISM) the implementation and roll-out of PowerFactory is the highest profile software project Eskom Distribution is undertaking this year.

PowerFactory was chosen after an extensive evaluation process of all technical functions offered. Standard features, such as the integration of all these functions into a seamless and user friendly single interface package, using one database, further counted in PowerFactory's favour. The evaluation also considered PowerFactory's ability to interface to existing Eskom databases (GIS and equipment database), and the support offered.

PowerFactory is a power system simulation software capable of performing loadflow studies in radial and meshed networks (balanced and unbalanced), short circuit analysis, protection co-ordination of all types of relays, transient, dynamic and voltage stability, Electro-magnetic transient simulation, harmonic analysis and reliability studies. It further offers specific functions for distribution and reticulation studies, such as open tie optimisation, optimum capacitor placement, cable reinforcement optimisation, line loads, load profiles (e.g. daily and weekly), accurate models for variable speed drives, arc furnaces, motors, etc, unbalanced loads, single and dual phase line technologies (e.g. SWER, traction loads), voltage profile studies (feederplots: V/km), voltage drop and cable loading analysis, optimal power flow and consideration of load diversity factors (e.g. Herman-Beta method).
